PICA and the Time-Based Art Festival: Portland’s Edge of Tomorrow

If Portland art has a research lab, it’s PICA — the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Since 1995, PICA has championed the experimental: performance, installation, dance and ideas that don’t fit in frames, presented in warehouses and raw spaces across the city.

Its crown jewel is the Time-Based Art (TBA) Festival each September: ten days when artists from five continents turn Portland into an international capital of performance — late-night shows, world premieres and conversations that spill into the streets. The festival’s “Late Night” series is the stuff of local legend.

PICA’s Precipice Fund supports unjuried grassroots art projects across the region. Daring, generous and gloriously unpredictable — this is where Portland goes to see what art does next.
