Its neon tower has glowed over Sandy Boulevard since 1926, and the Hollywood Theatre remains Portland’s grandest argument that movies deserve a palace. Run by the nonprofit Film Action Oregon, the Spanish Colonial landmark screens an inspired mix: new independents, 70mm epics, Kung Fu Fridays and holiday horror marathons.
The restoration is a love letter — hand-painted details, a mighty new marquee and projection that mixes pristine digital with real film, including rare 70mm prints that draw cinephiles from across the Northwest. Upstairs, the small screening rooms and the Movie Madness video-store partnership keep film culture deliciously weird.
Beyond screenings, the theatre runs filmmaker labs and youth education. In Portland, even the movies are community-built.
