World Forestry Center: Where Portland Celebrates Its Forest Soul

Portland is a city built by timber and shaded by it — and the World Forestry Center in Washington Park tells that story with joy. Its Discovery Museum has delighted visitors since 1971 with exhibits that put you inside the forest: ride a canopy lift to the treetops, steer a virtual timber harvester, and meet “Talking Tree,” the museum’s beloved animatronic ponderosa pine.

The two-story museum explores how sustainable forestry works in the Pacific Northwest — from seedlings to salmon streams — and how forests in Russia, China and beyond connect to Oregon’s own woods. Outside, the lovely Magness Memorial Tree Farm extends the lesson into real forest.

It’s a natural pairing with the zoo and gardens next door: one stop for science, one for story, all under the same green canopy.
