Tucked into a forested cliffside in northeast Portland, The Grotto is one of the city’s most peaceful escapes: a 62-acre sanctuary and botanical garden that has welcomed visitors seeking quiet beauty since 1924.
The heart of the lower gardens is a towering basalt cliff with a cave carved into its base, home to an altar and a replica of Michelangelo’s PietĆ , surrounded by candlelight and towering firs. Around it, gentle paths wind through lush gardens, reflecting ponds and more than a hundred statues tucked among the trees ā every turn feels like a deep breath.
An elevator built into the cliff carries visitors to the upper level, where a whole second garden opens up: manicured lawns, the Meditation Chapel with floor-to-ceiling glass framing a sweeping view of the Columbia River valley and Mount St. Helens on clear days, and quiet trails that make the city feel a world away. The lower gardens are free to visit, and the grounds are open daily.
Each holiday season, The Grotto also hosts its beloved Festival of Lights, one of Portland’s favorite Christmas traditions, filling the gardens with glowing displays, choirs and candlelight. But you do not need a special occasion: on an ordinary autumn morning, with mist in the firs and nobody in a hurry, The Grotto might be the calmest, loveliest walk in Portland.
