Washington Park: Portland’s 410-Acre Backyard of Wonders

If Portland had a treasure chest, it would be Washington Park. Across 410 forested acres in the west hills, the park bundles the city’s greatest hits: the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, the International Rose Test Garden, the World Forestry Center, Hoyt Arboretum’s 2,300 tree species and miles of trails vanishing into Forest Park.

A free shuttle loops the park in season, and the Washington Park MAX station — the deepest transit station in North America, 260 feet down — pops you out right at the zoo’s door. Kids make a beeline for the Oregon Zoo’s elephants and the forestry center’s talking tree; garden lovers drift uphill to roses and maples.

History hides here too: the Sacajawea statue, the Holocaust Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial sit in contemplative groves, while the archery range and tennis courts keep locals playing all year.

Give it a full day. Washington Park isn’t one attraction — it’s Portland distilled into a single green hillside.
