Family Bike Ride: The Eastbank Esplanade and Tilikum Loop

Portland’s signature family ride fits in an afternoon: cross the Steel Bridge’s river-level walkway, roll south along the Eastbank Esplanade — part of it floating on the Willamette itself — and return over car-free Tilikum Crossing. About three miles, almost all flat, and every yard of it postcard.

Stops make the ride: the floating dock for skyline photos, Vera Katz’s bronze statue waving from her bench, the Oregon Rail Heritage Center’s steam giants near the south end, and a gelato detour in the Central Eastside. Biketown’s orange bikes (and adaptive cycles) mean nobody needs to own a bike to join.

Go at golden hour, when the west hills glow and the bridges light up. This loop is why Portland kids grow up thinking bikes are just how you get to happiness.
