A Family Day at the Heinz History Center: Mister Rogers, Sports and Ketchup

The Heinz History Center might be the rare history museum where kids set the pace. Families start where every Pittsburgh childhood starts — in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, standing before the original sets and Daniel Tiger’s clock — then race upstairs to the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, where young fans can test the broadcast booth and stand beside the region’s championship trophies.

The rest of the building keeps the surprises coming: a 1949 Pittsburgh trolley to climb aboard, the Heinz ‘by the numbers’ exhibition with its giant ketchup bottle, a recreated 1940s classroom and rotating exhibitions with hands-on corners. The museum’s family programs add storytimes, scout nights and holiday events through the year.

The History Center is at 1212 Smallman Street in the Strip District. Plan your visit at heinzhistorycenter.org — and let the kids lead; they know what they’re doing.
