The Three Sisters and the Clemente Bridge: Pittsburgh’s Golden River Crossings

Only in Pittsburgh do bridges get family reunions. The Three Sisters — the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson bridges — march across the Allegheny River in a row: three nearly identical golden self-anchored suspension bridges, built in the 1920s and painted in the city’s signature Aztec gold. No other place on Earth has three of these in a line.

The Clemente Bridge, closest to PNC Park, closes to cars on Pirates game days and fills with fans in black and gold — the happiest walk to a ballgame in America. Named for the city’s patron saint of right field, it lands you at the statue of Roberto Clemente and the Riverwalk beyond.

Walk all three in an afternoon: start at the Clemente Bridge by PNC Park, cross to downtown, and come back over the Warhol into the North Shore. Photographers, come at golden hour — the bridges glow for a reason.
