The Rosenbach: Philadelphia’s Treasure House of Books and Stories

On a quiet block of Delancey Place in Philadelphia stands a treasure house for anyone who loves stories. The Rosenbach Museum & Library preserves one of the world’s finest collections of rare books, manuscripts and literary artifacts, all inside an elegant 1865 townhouse.

The collection grew from the passion of Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach and his brother Philip, legendary dealers in rare books. Today visitors can encounter treasures linked to beloved authors across centuries, from early printed Shakespeare to the manuscript world of James Joyce’s Ulysses, the papers of poet Marianne Moore, and the Maurice Sendak collection, which delights fans of Where the Wild Things Are.

Beyond its galleries, The Rosenbach welcomes the community with talks, courses, book clubs and festive evenings that bring literature to life, including its famous celebrations of Joyce and Burns Night gatherings filled with poetry and music.

Small, welcoming and endlessly surprising, The Rosenbach is a happy reminder that a single house full of books can hold whole worlds. Guided tours make it an easy, enriching stop in the heart of Philadelphia.
