Winter officially arrives in the heart of Philadelphia on Friday, November 13, when Dilworth Park, right beside historic City Hall, transforms for the season with ice skating, glowing gardens and local holiday shopping, Center City District announced on October 14.
The centerpiece is the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink, Philadelphia’s only downtown seasonal skating rink, open daily through February 21, 2027. Skaters can reserve timed 90-minute sessions in advance. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children 10 and younger, with skate rentals for $11 and discounts for groups of 10 or more. Next door, the cozy Rothman Orthopaedics Cabin serves comfort-food favorites for lunch and dinner, with free fire pits warming its outdoor terrace.
On the Albert M. Greenfield Lawn, the Wintergarden invites a slower stroll beneath hundreds of twinkling lights, illuminated overhead sculptures and seasonal foliage. It stays open even longer, through March 28, 2027, making it a peaceful pause amid the festive bustle of Center City.
Completing the celebration, the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market runs through January 1, 2027, with dozens of local makers offering home goods, jewelry, skincare, artwork and artisanal treats — a cheerful way to shop small this season. Families will also find extras throughout the winter, from College Nights on Thursdays to accessible sled skating reservations starting in January.
It is a joyful, all-ages way to welcome the season in one of the city’s most beloved public spaces. Happy City News recommends reserving rink sessions early, especially on weekends and holidays.
