Nilima Sheikh’s First New York Solo Show Opens at MoMA

There is a beautiful new reason to spend a day at the Museum of Modern Art: Nilima Sheikh: Fractured Skies, the very first solo presentation of the acclaimed Indian artist’s work in New York, now on view through June 13, 2027.

Over a five-decade career, Sheikh has reinvented narrative painting, weaving together image, text, and stenciled patterns into multilayered stories that foreground women’s voices and lived experiences. The exhibition gathers works from the past two decades, anchored by selections from her celebrated series Each Night Put Kashmir in Your Dreams — monumental suspended, double-sided painted scrolls, each measuring 12 by 6 feet, painted in glowing casein tempera.

The show also marks the world debut of a brand-new, site-responsive set of paintings created especially for MoMA, commissioned by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, which co-organized the exhibition. It is a joyful moment of cultural exchange between New York and New Delhi — and a must-see for families, art lovers, and anyone who believes stories can change how we see the world.

Plan your visit and step into one of the most poetic gallery experiences of the season.
