Two days covers the two New Yorks every first-timer needs: Midtown’s icons and Lower Manhattan’s history. The subway connects both days in under 30 minutes.
Day 1 — Midtown icons
Morning (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM): Top of the Rock at opening (8 AM), Grand Central Terminal, 5th Avenue stroll.
Afternoon (2:00 – 5:30 PM): MoMA or Times Square, Bryant Park pause.
Evening: Dinner in the Theater District + Broadway show.
Day 2 — Downtown and Brooklyn Bridge
Morning (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM): Take the subway to Bowling Green and walk to Battery Park for the first Statue of Liberty ferry (departs 9:00 AM; crown tickets must be reserved well in advance — they sell out up to 90 days ahead and same-day crown tickets are not available). The round trip with Liberty Island takes about 3 hours. Back on land, walk through the Financial District: Wall Street, the Charging Bull, Federal Hall.
Lunch (12:30 – 2:00 PM): Stone Street — a cobblestone lane packed with restaurants, or the food halls downtown.
Afternoon (2:00 – 5:30 PM): The 9/11 Memorial (the outdoor plaza is free and deeply moving; the museum needs 2 hours — pick one). Then walk to City Hall and cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot (~30 minutes) into DUMBO for the classic Manhattan-skyline photo between the bridge pillars.
Evening: Dinner in DUMBO with the skyline view, then subway back to Manhattan.
Getting around: subway 4/5 to Bowling Green/Fulton St; the bridge walk ends at High St (A/C/F). Photo: Dietmar Rabich / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0).
