New York’s classic seaside playground has been making people happy since the 1800s, and it still does. Coney Island is where the city goes to play: free beach, salty breeze, and a boardwalk full of life.
On Brooklyn’s southern shore, the public beach stretches wide and welcoming, and the 2.7-mile Riegelmann Boardwalk is perfect for strolling, cycling and people-watching. The historic Parachute Jump tower lights up in color at night, and on summer Friday nights free fireworks light up the sky over the ocean.
Getting there is part of the fun: ride the subway (D, F, N or Q trains) all the way to Stillwell Avenue and feel the excitement build as you get closer to the sea. The beach is free, the boardwalk is free, and the memories are priceless.
It is ideal for families, beach lovers and summer day-trippers. Practical tip: go early on summer weekends to claim a good spot, bring sunscreen, snacks and plenty of water, and check the schedule for the free Friday night fireworks. Off-season visits are lovely too — the boardwalk is peaceful and the ocean views are stunning.
