Say Hello to Lady Liberty

A gift from France in 1886, standing 305 feet tall in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty remains the most beloved symbol of freedom in the world. Seeing her in person gives you goosebumps — she is even more moving than you imagined.

Lady Liberty stands on Liberty Island, cared for by the National Park Service as a national monument. The island is home to a wonderful museum telling the story of the statue and of the millions of immigrants who sailed past her torch on their way to a new life. The views of Manhattan from the island are spectacular.

Ferries to the island depart from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. But here is a happy secret: the Staten Island Ferry is completely free and sails right past the statue, giving you a fantastic view without spending a cent. Battery Park’s waterfront promenade also offers great free views across the harbor.

It is ideal for first-time visitors, families and history lovers. Practical tip: if you want to set foot on the island, book ferry tickets well in advance, especially for the crown. For a free experience, ride the Staten Island Ferry at sunset — the skyline and the statue glowing gold is pure magic.
