MoMA PS1 Turns 50 and Gives New York the Best Gift: Free Admission for Everyone

One of New York’s most beloved art institutions just turned 50, and it is celebrating the way every museum should: by opening its doors to everyone, for free. MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens, is now offering free admission to all visitors, a gift made possible by philanthropist Sonya Yu that will keep the museum free for the next three years.

That makes PS1 the largest free museum in all of New York City. Housed in a stunning historic Romanesque Revival building that was once a public school, the museum has spent five decades championing bold, experimental contemporary art and giving a platform to emerging artists who go on to shape the art world.

From its legendary courtyard parties to its groundbreaking exhibitions, PS1 has always been the cool, adventurous sibling of the New York museum family. Now, with the ticket price gone, there is no reason to wait: students, families, art lovers and the simply curious can all walk in and explore one of the city’s most inspiring cultural spaces.

Fifty years of cutting-edge art, and the next three are on the house. Happy birthday, PS1!
