A Radiant Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans Shines at the Whitney

The Whitney Museum of American Art is celebrating the luminous imagination of one of the twentieth century’s most extraordinary self-taught artists. “The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans” brings together radiant drawings, paintings, and collages created between 1935 and 1981, drawn from dreams, spiritual revelation, mythology, popular culture, and the natural world.

More than fifty years after the Whitney presented Minnie Evans’s groundbreaking first solo museum exhibition in 1975, this touring show offers a fresh look at her vision. Through brilliant color, dense patterning, and recurring motifs of flowers, birds, angels, and human faces, Evans painted an imagined world where the earthly and the divine flow together — a place of harmony and spiritual unity born from her own inner life.

The exhibition, organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, gathers works that feel at once deeply personal and universal: a joyful meditation on faith, imagination, and transcendence that still feels alive today. It is a rare chance to step inside the dream world of an artist who painted hope and beauty with her own hand.

See it now at the Whitney, on view since August 22.
