There is a brand-new celebrity in New York, and she weighs just a few pounds. The Bronx Zoo has just introduced a female snow leopard cub born on May 31 to proud parents Dari and Moutig, and she is already exploring the zoo’s Himalayan Highlands habitat for all to see.
After passing her physical exams and routine vaccinations with flying colors, the playful cub is now out and about, climbing rocks and discovering her new world. Her arrival brings the zoo’s snow leopard family to eight, making the Bronx Zoo one of the best places in the country to meet these extraordinary cats.
Sometimes called the “ghosts of the mountain,” snow leopards are among the most elusive big cats on Earth. Their smoky spotted coats, oversized furry paws that work like natural snowshoes, and long woolly tails make them perfectly built for the high mountains of the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau. The species is considered Vulnerable to extinction in the wild, so every birth is a hopeful step for its future.
A fall visit is the perfect excuse to meet her: crisp autumn air, fewer crowds, and one very special cub learning the ropes of zoo life. Happy City News invites New York families to plan a day at the zoo and fall in love with the mountain’s most mysterious newcomer.
