New Orleans Named the Only City on World Monuments Fund’s 2026 ‘Irreplaceable America’ List

New Orleans just earned one of the sweetest honors a city can get. The World Monuments Fund has named the Crescent City to Irreplaceable America, a new national list celebrating the places that define America’s soul — and New Orleans is the only city to make the 2026 list.

What makes this recognition special is that it doesn’t honor a single landmark. Instead, it celebrates the whole city as a living cultural landscape: the historic neighborhoods, the colorful vernacular architecture, the beloved public traditions, the water, the music, the food and the everyday life that ties it all together.

The nomination was led by the Preservation Resource Center, working hand in hand with Tulane University’s Historic Preservation program, the Louisiana Landmarks Society, The Ella Project and The Water Collaborative — a true community effort to show the world that in New Orleans, architecture, culture, water and daily life are inseparable.

For visitors and locals alike, it’s one more reason to wander beyond the postcards: stroll the French Quarter, the Garden District and every neighborhood in between, and feel the living culture that earned this honor. Happy City News will keep celebrating everything that makes New Orleans irreplaceable.
