From Nothing to Something: Nashville Honors Techno Pioneer Juan Atkins in a Free Day at NMAAM on November 7

Nashville is invited to a joyful, free day of music, learning and community at the National Museum of African American Music. On Saturday, November 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum at 510 Broadway presents From Nothing to Something: Honoring Juan Atkins, a special celebration of the pioneering artist whose innovation helped shape Detroit techno and transform electronic music around the world.

The day is packed with hands-on fun for all ages. Heartbeat Saturdays: Techno Edition runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., bringing movement and community together in the lobby, while at 11:30 a.m. Youth Amplified: Techno Edition lets students and young creators explore the evolution of the beat, from the iconic 808 to lo-fi sounds, with the museum’s Education Department.

At 1:00 p.m., The Producers’ Network connects local and regional producers and DJs in a friendly session led by board member Shannon Sanders, exploring the creative process and career pathways in Nashville’s music community. Then, at 2:00 p.m., Juan Atkins takes the stage for an in-depth conversation moderated by Aaron Monty — his first appearance in Nashville — exploring Detroit’s musical legacy and the technology behind the sound.

The celebration closes at 3:00 p.m. with the unveiling of artifacts generously donated by Atkins to the museum’s collection. Admission is free with registration, so bring family and friends and help honor a living legend while inspiring the next generation of artists and innovators.
