Final Weeks: ‘Common Ground’ Showcases a Century of American Painting at Cheekwood

Time is running out for art lovers in Music City. Common Ground: The Hainsworth Collection in Conversation with Cheekwood’s Permanent Collection closes November 1 at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, bringing an extraordinary pairing of two great Nashville collections to its final weeks.

The exhibition brings together, for the first time, paintings from the Hainsworth family collection alongside treasures from Cheekwood’s own permanent collection. Together they create a rich visual survey of American painting from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, tracing the journey from the sweeping landscapes of the Hudson River School through American Impressionism to the bold, city-inspired painters of the Ashcan School.

Highlights include Adam Emory Albright’s glowing 1895 canvas The Raft and F. Luis Mora’s luminous 1910 Shadows in the Orchard, displayed in dialogue with Cheekwood’s works. Side by side, the two Nashville-based collections reveal shared cultural aspirations and contrasting artistic visions, offering a vibrant perspective on American art.

A visit to the exhibition also opens the door to Cheekwood’s 55 acres of gardens, the historic mansion, and the Ann & Monroe Carell Jr. Family Sculpture Trail. The exhibition runs through November 1, 2026, so plan your visit now and don’t miss this one-of-a-kind conversation between two hometown collections.
