The Tennessee State Capitol: A Hilltop Landmark With a View

Standing proudly on the highest hill in downtown Nashville, the Tennessee State Capitol is one of the oldest working capitols in America — and its views are worth the climb alone.

Completed in 1859 and designed in the Greek Revival style, this National Historic Landmark houses the Tennessee General Assembly. Its elegant portico, grand chambers, and the tomb of President James K. Polk on the grounds make it a must-see for history fans. Free guided tours reveal stories of the state’s past and the building’s remarkable stonework.

It’s ideal for history lovers, students, architecture fans, and families — and the surrounding plaza offers some of the best skyline photo angles in the city.

On weekdays you can watch democracy in action, and on quiet weekends the grounds become a peaceful picnic spot with a view.

Tip: pair your visit with Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park right below the hill for a full morning of free Tennessee history.
