Across from Mia, in a gracious Washburn-Fair Oaks mansion, the Hennepin History Museum keeps Minneapolis’s story at human scale. Where big museums tell the state’s saga, this one collects the city’s everyday treasures: fire department helmets, streetcar tokens, society photographs and the ephemera of 150 years of Minneapolis life.
Rotating exhibitions dive into neighborhood histories, local industries and forgotten characters, drawn from archives any resident can research. The mansion itself — all carved wood and stained glass from the flour-barons’ era — is half the pleasure.
It’s the museum equivalent of a grandmother’s attic, curated with love. If you want to understand how Minneapolis became Minneapolis, one kitchen table at a time, start here.
