An Art Deco palace of books, murals, and gardens — hiding in plain sight downtown.
The Los Angeles Central Library, completed in 1926, is one of the most beautiful public buildings in California. Its Goodhue-designed tower is covered in mosaics, the rotunda ceiling tells the story of California in painted murals, and the Maguire Gardens outside are a peaceful green refuge in the middle of downtown.
It is ideal for book lovers, architecture fans, and families: the children’s wing is wonderful, the library hosts free author talks and exhibitions, and the rooftop and garden areas are perfect for a quiet afternoon. And of course, everything inside is free with a library card — which is also free.
Practical tip: take the free guided tour on Saturdays to learn the building’s secrets, from the famous sphinxes to the chandeliers. It is two blocks from the Metro, making it an easy downtown stop.
