Los Angeles is shimmering with textile art: LACMA presents Textile Alchemy: The Art of Reiko Sudō & NUNO, on view September 20, 2026 through March 7, 2027 at the Resnick Pavilion.
Reiko Sudō is an acclaimed Japanese designer who has pioneered innovative textiles for more than four decades. NUNO, the textile collective in Japan she leads, has transformed Japanese textile design by experimenting with traditional and contemporary materials and techniques. The largest in-depth survey of her work to date, the exhibition traces Sudō and NUNO’s innovative processes — including technology and sustainability initiatives created with independent artisans and workshops across Japan — through more than 100 limited-edition textiles, many drawn from LACMA’s own collection, plus drawings, sketches, raw materials, tools and prototypes.
Angelenos may already know her work without realizing it: Sudō designed the custom chrome-sputtered curtains for LACMA’s David Geffen Galleries, the result of a multi-year collaboration with the museum and architect Peter Zumthor, making her art a permanent part of the visitor experience. A recreation of the original 1984 NUNO shop anchors the exhibition’s immersive design.
