Autry Museum Opens “Takes Care of Them,” Dyani White Hawk’s Tribute to Lakota Women, on November 7

Los Angeles is getting a beautiful new reason to visit Griffith Park. On November 7, 2026, the Autry Museum of the American West opens Takes Care of Them in its Irene Helen Jones Parks Gallery of Art, presenting Dyani White Hawk’s celebrated 2019 print series as a tribute to Lakota women.

White Hawk, who is Sicangu Lakota, reflects on women’s roles in four areas: Wowahokunkiya (Lead), Wokage (Create), Nakicizin (Protect) and Wachantognaka (Nurture). Each large-scale screenprint with metallic foil features a Lakota dress adorned differently, emphasizing a shared form while celebrating the complexity and beauty of this important garment.

Through the dresses, White Hawk explores color, texture and iconography grounded in Lakota cultural knowledge. The series illustrates how women’s roles stand at the foundation of Plains culture, and invites visitors to slow down and contemplate what each garment reveals about leadership, creativity, protection and care.

The Autry, at 4700 Western Heritage Way in Griffith Park, announced the exhibition in its October 19, 2026 press release as part of a season celebrating Native art and resilience. It is a thoughtful, uplifting stop for anyone who loves art that carries a story in every thread.
