October is shaping up to be a wonderful month at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas! The museum, located on the beautiful Springs Preserve campus at 309 S. Valley View Blvd., has announced a full lineup of programs that invite visitors to explore Nevada’s natural and human history through hands-on activities, movement and photography.
Families are in for a treat every Saturday in October with Discovery Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each week brings something new to discover, from fossils and artifacts from the museum’s education collection to crafts, puzzles and games. It’s the perfect weekend outing for curious kids and their grown-ups.
Looking for something more active? Animal Flow sessions, presented by The Strip Movement, take place on Saturdays, October 10 and 17, from 2 to 3 p.m. These fun movement workshops draw inspiration from animals found in Nevada’s wild places, helping participants of all ages — from families to seniors — build strength and flexibility.
Photography and history lovers won’t want to miss the Common Threads lecture on Thursday, October 15, from 4 to 5 p.m. “Through Rothstein’s Lens: New Deal Photography and Nevada’s Transformation” offers a behind-the-scenes look at photographer Arthur Rothstein’s 1940 Nevada assignment, with his daughter Ann Rothstein-Segan and historian Brodie Hefner. The talk arrives during the final days of the featured exhibit “The New Deal in the New West: On the Road with Arthur Rothstein in Nevada,” which closes on Sunday, October 18 — your last chance to see 35 stunning 1940 photographs along with the photographer’s own camera, tripod and camp stove.
The Common Threads program is free with museum admission. The museum is open Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mark your calendar and come celebrate Nevada’s stories this October!
