Kansas City grew up as a cowtown, and the American Royal has celebrated that heritage since 1899 — its museum and exhibitions keep the story of American agriculture, livestock and the western way of life front and center.
For generations of Kansas Citians, the American Royal means fall: livestock shows, horse shows, the world’s largest barbecue contest and the parade traditions that made the city famous. The Royal’s museum displays trace how ranching and farming built this city at the meeting of the trails.
In 2026 the tradition is getting a permanent home of its own: the American Royal’s new campus rising in Kansas City, Kansas — 390,000 square feet of barns and show space, about 80 percent complete — gives this 127-year-old institution its first owned home.
The Fall Livestock Show runs through October 25. The boots, hats and heritage are real — come see where Kansas City’s cowboy heart beats on.
