Every great city needs a great front lawn, and Kansas City’s is Loose Park: 75 acres of rolling green just south of the Country Club Plaza, beloved for its rose garden, its shady trees and its wonderfully unhurried pace.
The Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden is the park’s crown jewel, with some 3,000 roses in 130 varieties blooming in circles of color each late spring and summer — a favorite backdrop for weddings, portraits and quiet morning walks.
History hides in the grass here, too: markers and cannons recall the Battle of Westport, one of the largest Civil War battles west of the Mississippi, fought on this very ground in 1864.
Families spread picnics, kids race to the playground and spray park, tennis players fill the courts, and everyone seems to end up strolling the tree-lined paths at golden hour. Loose Park is not an attraction you check off a list — it is simply where Kansas City goes to breathe.
