Cinema in a Temple of Art: The Nelson-Atkins’ Tivoli Film Series

The Nelson-Atkins Museum’s Tivoli Cinema series proves that a great art museum can also be a great movie house. In the museum’s Atkins Auditorium, the fall lineup pairs art and film beautifully — including van Gogh’s story in the hand-painted “Loving Vincent” (October 16) and Pixar’s luminous “Coco” (October 30) for Día de los Muertos season.

The series, reviving the spirit of the beloved Tivoli theatre, programs classics, international cinema and art-world documentaries through the year — capped this season with a members’ lecture by artist Farhad Ostovani (October 29) exploring where painting and cinema meet.

Tickets are modest, the setting is sublime and the pre-show stroll through the galleries is built in.

Dinner, a masterpiece, a movie: the Nelson-Atkins may be the best date night in Kansas City.
