Project Row Houses Opens the Third Southern Survey Biennial with Seven Southern Artists

Houston’s historic Third Ward is blooming with art! Project Row Houses, the beloved nonprofit arts and community organization, has opened Round 61: Southern Survey Biennial III — the third edition of its biennial celebrating recent work by contemporary visual artists living and working across the American South.

The opening reception and community market took place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and the exhibition runs through February 14, 2027 across the seven art houses at 2521 Holman Street. Visitors can wander the vibrant campus Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 PM, Saturdays 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sundays noon to 5 PM.

Seven artists and artist teams were chosen from more than 200 proposals by guest juror Jessica S. Hong, chief curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art: Beatriz Bellorín, Jhanielle Brown, and Billion Tekleab of Houston; Carrie Iverson of North Texas; Emmanuel Massillon of Washington, D.C.; and Kennedi Carter and the CAO collective (Huiyin Zhou and Laura Dudu) of Durham, North Carolina.

Each installation receives a $5,000 stipend — and one artist will take home a $25,000 prize — with Project Row Houses covering travel and lodging so artists can be present during installation. A celebration of Southern creativity, community, and support for working artists. Don’t miss it!
