Two Generations, One Landscape: “Divination” Pairs Beverly Buchanan and Dionne Lee at CAMH

Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum Houston has a quietly powerful pairing on view this fall. Divination: Beverly Buchanan & Dionne Lee, in the Nina and Michael Zilkha Gallery through February 14, 2027, brings together two artists of different generations who both read the American landscape for the stories hidden inside it.

Beverly Buchanan (1940-2015) is represented by original photographs and rich material from her archives – journals, writing and ephemera – including documentation of her cast-concrete frustulas placed in rural Georgia and her beloved small-scale shack sculptures, which memorialize Southern homes and the people who lived in them. Alongside her work, Columbus-based artist Dionne Lee (born 1988 in New York City) presents videos, photographs and sculptures that ask what it means to tend to, seek out and honor the land we live on.

Curated by Senior Curator Rebecca Matalon, Divination is the second exhibition in CAMH’s series pairing artists across generations to spark fresh interpretations. Both artists explore land as sanctuary and sustenance, and the museum frames their practices as a form of divination – making visible what too often remains unseen. Support comes from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and as always at CAMH, admission is free at 5216 Montrose Boulevard in the Museum District.
