Movement Festival: Detroit’s Techno Homecoming Takes Over Hart Plaza Each Memorial Day Weekend

Techno was born in Detroit, and every Memorial Day weekend the city throws it a homecoming. Movement, the electronic music festival at Hart Plaza, draws tens of thousands of fans from around the world to the riverfront where the Belleville Three first wired synthesizers to a dance floor.

Across multiple stages stacked along the river, the lineup bridges generations — Detroit pioneers and underground heroes alongside the global stars they inspired. Between sets, the plaza’s fountains, the skyline and the river do the rest, and the city’s clubs keep the beat going until sunrise with official afterparties.

Movement returns to Hart Plaza each Memorial Day weekend; the 2027 edition is expected May 29–31. Lineup announcements land early in the year at movementfestival.com. Start planning — the world’s techno faithful already are.
