Final Days: ‘Reimagine African American Art’ Closes October 18 at the DIA

Detroiters have one last chance to see a landmark rehang. Reimagine African American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts closes October 18, 2026, ending a celebrated run that placed the museum’s rich holdings of African American art in bold new arrangements.

The installation mixed historic and contemporary voices — 19th-century landscapes by Robert S. Duncanson alongside modern masters — and introduced many visitors to works that had waited too long in storage. It launched the DIA’s multi-year Reimagine project, which continues in November when the reimagined modern and contemporary galleries open.

If you have been meaning to go, this is the week. The DIA, at 5200 Woodward Avenue, offers free general admission to residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Hours and visiting tips are at dia.org.
