Inside Hitsville U.S.A.: The Little House Where the Motown Sound Was Born

It may be the most famous small house in American music. At 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, the Motown Museum preserves Hitsville U.S.A., the home Berry Gordy turned into a hit factory in 1959 — and the place where The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Michael Jackson recorded songs that changed the world.

Guided tours lead visitors through Gordy’s former apartment and offices and into legendary Studio A, the converted garage where the Funk Brothers laid down the Motown Sound. Standing in that tiny room, in front of the original instruments and the echo chamber in the ceiling, is a goosebump moment for any music fan.

The nonprofit museum welcomes fans from around the globe and continues to grow its campus on West Grand Boulevard. Tours often sell out on weekends, so booking ahead at motownmuseum.org is recommended.
