‘Handmade: The Crafting of America’ Celebrates Makers at Henry Ford Museum

Long before mass production, America was built by hand — and a major exhibition at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is celebrating the people who made it. Handmade: The Crafting of America, on view through January 18, 2027, brings together more than 100 artifacts of folk art, textiles, ceramics and craft in the museum’s Collections Gallery.

The exhibition traces how handmade objects carried culture, identity and ingenuity across generations — from quilts and woven coverlets to pottery and carved wood. In Dearborn, where Henry Ford assembled one of the world’s great collections of American innovation, the show offers a thoughtful counterpoint: progress measured not by the assembly line, but by the patience of a single pair of hands.

Handmade is included with admission to Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, open daily in Dearborn at 20900 Oakwood Boulevard. Details are at thehenryford.org.
