Project: Ripple Effect at COSI Turns Ohio’s Water Story Into Hands-On Play

Columbus has a new reason to make a splash at COSI. Project: Ripple Effect, the science museum’s interactive exhibit created in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, brings Ohio’s water story to life inside the museum’s Ocean exhibition — and it is included with general admission.

The journey starts deep in time, when Ohio lay beneath a shallow ancient sea. From there, visitors discover how water has shaped the state over millions of years, and how the choices people make today still send ripples through rivers, lakes and wetlands.

Every stop is hands-on. Guests can test their strength against freshwater mussels, nature’s powerful water filters, in a fast-paced challenge, then design their own wetland ecosystem with plants, animals and structures to see how each decision affects water and wildlife. An interactive watershed game shows in real time how transportation, yard care and waste can change water quality.

There is also a detailed living wetland to explore — the kind of ecosystem that filters water, prevents flooding and supports biodiversity — plus a chance to catch and identify native fish and experiment with stream tables to watch erosion and filtration in action.

Designed for all ages, Project: Ripple Effect delivers a joyful Columbus lesson: even small actions can make a big difference for Ohio’s waterways. Happy City News recommends adding it to your next family visit downtown.
