American Icons at 45: Opera Columbus’ Boldest Season Yet

Forty-five years young and swinging: Opera Columbus celebrates its 45th anniversary with an “American Icons” season that reads like a dare — a jazz-soaked “Pirates!” in New Orleans dress, Puccini’s gold-rush “La Fanciulla del West” (February 26 & 28, 2027, Southern Theatre) and the Columbus premiere of “The Shining” (April 16–18, 2027), the opera of Stephen King’s novel.

Add the beloved Messiah Sing-Along filling bars and cafés in December and the Cooper-Bing Competition (May 16, 2027) spotlighting opera’s next stars, and the season touches every corner of the art form — comedy, western, horror and holiday chorus.

Opera Columbus has spent a decade reinventing who opera is for. Season 45 is the victory lap.

New to opera? This is your year. Columbus is making it very hard to say no.
