No dome, no problem: the Ohio Statehouse is one of America’s great capitols precisely because it’s different — a muscular Greek Revival landmark (1839–1861) whose low cupola and Doric columns have anchored Columbus since before the Civil War.
Free guided tours run daily through marble halls where Lincoln spoke, past the rotunda’s original paintings to the Map Room and the Statehouse Museum’s interactive exhibits. Outside, the 10 acres of Capitol Square gardens, monuments and the Ohio Veterans Plaza offer downtown’s most dignified stroll.
Because it was built by legislators’ own frugality (and partly by prison labor), the Statehouse wears its history honestly — every scratch tells Ohio’s story.
It’s free, it’s gorgeous, and it still works for a living. Democracy’s prettiest office building awaits.
