Current: Janet Echelman’s 229-Foot Sculpture Floating Over Columbus

Look up, Columbus. Suspended above the intersection of Gay and High streets floats “Current,” Janet Echelman’s 229-foot sculpture of soft fiber nets — the largest of her celebrated aerial works ever installed over a street, and the Columbus Museum of Art’s gift to the whole downtown.

Unveiled in June 2026, the billowing form shifts with wind and light: by day a cloud with a memory of the Scioto River’s currents, by night a glowing presence threaded with color above the city’s oldest crossroads. Echelman’s team wove more than 500 miles of fiber into the piece.

Unlike any museum piece you’ve met, this one has no walls and no hours — it performs for the city around the clock.

Public art this bold is how a city announces its ambitions. Columbus just wrote its in the sky.
