The Obama Presidential Center: Chicago’s Newest Landmark Blooms in Jackson Park

Chicago’s South Side has a radiant new place to explore. The Obama Presidential Center opened its doors on June 19, 2026, transforming 19.3 acres of historic Jackson Park into a welcoming civic campus at 6001 S. Stony Island Avenue — and most of it is completely free to enjoy.

The grounds are open every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., inviting visitors to wander green lawns, the Eleanor Roosevelt Fruit and Vegetable Garden, a playground and the Wetland Walk. Inside the eight-story Museum building, four floors of exhibits trace a presidency and a life in Chicago, with highlights that include a full-scale replica of the Oval Office and the soaring Nelson Mandela Sky Room, where the top-floor views sweep across Jackson Park, Lake Michigan and the downtown skyline.

The campus was designed as a neighborhood gathering place as much as a museum. A brand-new Chicago Public Library branch welcomes readers of all ages, the Home Court athletic facility centers on a regulation-size basketball court, and cafés and community programs keep the plaza lively year-round. Museum tickets are $30 for adults, with free admission for Illinois residents on Tuesdays, and the Obama Foundation recommends reserving timed tickets in advance.

Whether you come for the history, the gardens or simply a golden-hour stroll under the tower, the Center has instantly become one of Chicago’s essential places to visit.
