In Lincoln Park, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum – home of the Chicago Academy of Sciences – is Chicago’s gentlest science museum, and for many families its favorite. The Judy Istock Butterfly Haven surrounds visitors with hundreds of fluttering butterflies (stand still and one may land on you), while RiverWorks and the nature labs let kids dam streams, examine specimens and meet local wildlife up close.
Outside, trails wind through restored prairie and wetlands along the North Pond, and daily programs bring out animal ambassadors and story times. It’s science at kid height: calm, hands-on and full of small wonders that stick with children long after the visit.
