Here’s a happy surprise: one of America’s oldest and most beautiful zoos is completely free. Lincoln Park Zoo, founded in 1868, sits on 35 acres of lush gardens in the Lincoln Park neighborhood — and you never need a ticket, just your curiosity.
Lions, gorillas, penguins, and red pandas are the headline stars, but the zoo is also a conservation leader, caring for more than 200 species. The Regenstein African Journey and the Kovler Lion House bring the wild wonderfully close, while the ponds, boardwalks, and gardens make it feel like an escape from the city — even though the skyline sparkles right behind the trees.
It’s perfect for families with little ones, school groups, and animal lovers of all ages. Tip: arrive right at the 10 a.m. opening to see the animals at their most active, and pair your visit with a stroll through the neighboring Lincoln Park Conservatory, a Victorian glasshouse that is also free and glowing with tropical plants.
