The DuSable Black History Museum: 65 Years of Stories in Chicago

In Chicago, one museum carries a title no other can claim: the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center is the nation’s oldest independent African American museum, and it is celebrating 65 years of preserving and sharing Black history, art and culture.

Located at 740 East 56th Place, beside Washington Park, the museum welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Inside its historic building, galleries trace African American journeys through art, objects and storytelling, from African roots to Chicago’s own Great Migration heritage and the leaders who shaped the city and the nation.

For families and students, it is one of the most meaningful stops on the South Side: a place where Chicago’s story is told whole, with pride and with joy. The museum’s own invitation is simple — come and learn why this institution, founded generations ago, still anchors the neighborhood’s cultural life today.
