Independent Picture House and the Charlotte Film Festival: Cinema With a Local Accent

Charlotte’s film lovers finally have their clubhouse. The Independent Picture House, on the city’s east side, is a nonprofit arthouse cinema — three screens of first-run independents, documentaries, international cinema and classic revivals, programmed by people who believe a movie town is built one great screening at a time.

Each fall, the Charlotte Film Festival (since 2006) takes over screens citywide with features, shorts and documentaries from around the world — spotlighting North Carolina filmmakers and connecting them to audiences in filmmaker Q&As that run long and happy. Together with university film programs and a growing local production scene, they give Charlotte screens their own accent.

Skip the multiplex one night. The Picture House’s popcorn-and-foreign-film combo is how Charlotte does cinema with soul.
