On the shores of Mountain Island Lake in Huntersville, Latta Nature Preserve guards the Charlotte region’s wild heart: 1,460 acres of piedmont forest, prairie restoration and 16 miles of trails where the city’s roar fades to birdsong. It’s the largest nature preserve in Mecklenburg County — and it feels a world away.
Trails thread past lake overlooks and old farmsteads; the Quest Nature Center orients explorers; and the beloved Carolina Raptor Center shares the grounds, nursing eagles and owls back to the sky. Equestrian trails, fishing docks and picnic shelters make it a full-day escape for families, while weekday mornings belong to the deer.
Charlotte drinks its water from this lake. Latta is the beautiful reason the shoreline stays clean, green and gloriously quiet.
