Only in Charlotte would a city build itself a river. The U.S. National Whitewater Center, a nonprofit outdoor campus on 1,300 acres along the Catawba River, runs the world’s largest man-made whitewater river — and families can raft it together, with guides steering and class III-IV rapids supplying the squeals.
On dry land the menu keeps growing: zip lines through the canopy, rock-climbing walls and a deep-water soloing pool, ropes courses for every age, 50 miles of mountain-bike and hiking trails, flatwater kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the river itself. The River Jam concert series and the Tuck Fest spring festival turn evenings into lawn parties.
Day passes bundle it all; younger kids gravitate to the trails, climbing and splash-friendly shores. It’s the region’s happiest argument that adventure is a family value.
