Boston’s Riverside Lights Up: Free Nature in the City Festival Celebrates the Head of the Charles

One of the most beloved weekends of the year on the Charles River just got even better. This Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, Mass Audubon invites everyone to the free, family-friendly Nature in the City Festival: Head of the Charles at Magazine Beach Park Nature Center in Cambridge.

Timed with the world-famous Head of the Charles regatta, the festival pairs unbeatable riverside views of the rowers with a joyful afternoon of nature, art, and community. The celebration kicks off with a guided walk to discover the birds and other wildlife that share the river with the rowers — a reminder that the Charles belongs to more than just athletes.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors can connect with local climate action initiatives, grab light refreshments, and learn how to get involved in protecting their neighborhoods alongside community partners like Neighbors for Net Zero and Climable. Live music fills the air with a performance by Saklamara, a vibrant multi-ethnic fusion band.

As the sun begins to set, the magic really starts: local artist Elena Li will help families create their own paper lanterns, then everyone joins a glowing lantern parade along the river. It is the perfect way to mark the turning of the season, meet your neighbors, and celebrate one of Boston’s most scenic traditions. All ages welcome, no tickets needed — just bring your sense of wonder.
