October in Boston: Lanterns, Brass Bands and the Head of the Charles

October is when Boston shows off its very best: crisp fall air, glowing lanterns, brass bands in the streets, world-class rowing on the Charles and a calendar packed with arts and culture.

One of the month’s brightest sights is Boston Lights at Franklin Park Zoo, a dazzling lantern experience that returns with glowing displays and interactive fun for all ages. For more lantern magic, the Freedom Trail Lantern Tour sets off from the Boston Common Visitor Center with a spooky twist on the city’s history.

Music takes over the streets October 9-11 with the HONK! Festival, a free three-day celebration of brass bands, parades and dancing in Somerville’s Davis Square. On October 10, the Wang Theatre hosts “Outlander in Concert,” with a live orchestra performing Bear McCreary’s beloved score while highlights from eight seasons light up the screen.

Sports fans mark October 16 for the Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest rowing event in the world and Boston’s second-biggest sporting spectacle. That same weekend brings the free Boston Book Festival to Copley Square on October 17, celebrating the power of words with authors, readings and family activities. Also on October 17, the free Sweater Weather Fest turns City Hall Plaza into an open house for Boston’s film industry, with panels and local creators.

Theater lovers have plenty to cheer about: the Pulitzer-winning play “Purpose” at the Huntington Theatre and the Broadway sensation “Wicked” at the Citizens Opera House. Art hunters can explore the brand-new North End Historical Museum in the city’s oldest neighborhood, or shop the Affordable Art Fair at SoWa Power Station on October 22. And on October 25, families can close out the month with PruBoo, the Prudential Center’s beloved Halloween celebration.
