The Zakim Bridge: Boston’s Iconic Gateway to the Skyline

Lit up at night, it looks like a giant sail over the Charles River — the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is Boston’s most photographed modern landmark.

Opened in 2003, this cable-stayed bridge carries Interstate 93 into the city with a pair of 270-foot towers that echo the nearby Bunker Hill Monument. The best views are free: stroll along the Charles River near North Point Park or watch the city glow as you cross into downtown.

Named for civil rights leader Leonard P. Zakim, the bridge is more than concrete and cables — it is a symbol of Boston’s rebirth after the Big Dig, when the city traded an elevated highway for open parks and waterfront paths.

Perfect for photographers and first-time visitors arriving in Boston. Practical tip: see it after dark, when the blue-and-white lighting turns the whole structure into a work of art.
