Charlie Wallace Turns Tarot Stars Into Paper Dolls at 707 Gallery

The stars are lining up in downtown Pittsburgh. ‘Charlie Wallace: The Stars Are Watching,’ a joyful new exhibition from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, opens Friday, October 30 at 707 Gallery and runs through April 11, 2027 — and admission is free.

Wallace, a founding member of VaultArt Studio, is known for large-scale, meticulously rendered paper-doll compositions inspired by celebrity culture. For this show he takes on the Major Arcana of the tarot, the sequence of 22 cards that for centuries has mapped human experience, transformation and fate. Figures such as The Fool, The Magician and The Lovers become contemporary cultural icons, inviting visitors to see celebrity itself as a modern system of archetypes — full of beginnings, power, desire, loss and renewal.

The exhibition is the Trust’s fourth collaboration with VaultArt Studios, a Pittsburgh nonprofit and project of Achieva that provides a professional studio environment for artists with disabilities. Guest curated by Steph Neary of VaultArt, the show celebrates artists with disabilities not at the margins, but as vital contributors to contemporary art today.

707 Gallery, at 707 Penn Avenue, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closing briefly from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Stop in, meet the cards, and enjoy a colorful, welcoming celebration of imagination in the Cultural District.
